What you can expect this week...

Well I have finally decided to just take a break. I thought I could slog through this reading slump but apparently I'm completely burnt out. I think I have managed to finish 1 out of every 3-5 books I pick up. It's annoying and exhausting to say the least. Not sure how long of a break I'll be taking, but I'm hoping a week or two should be enough. I won't be completely MIA, I'll still be around posting the ARC reviews and whatever else I feel like at the time. Here is to getting over this reading slump! I'll see you guys around! :)

Hope everyone has a great week!

  • None?

I'll be keeping an eye out for Teardrop, Allegiant, and Iron Traitor, but I haven't read any of the previous books, so I'm not exactly in a rush to read them or anything. More time to catch up :)

Q: What are some of your favorite magazines?

I don't read magazines much at all. The only time I pick them up is while I'm in the checkout line at the grocery stuff and one of the headlines catches my eye, so it can be any magazine really. I don't even buy the groceries that often in my house either lol.

My Thoughts

A copy was provided through NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

Waterfell was...intriguing to say the least. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about the whole book. There were aspects I liked and not liked. They were both so well balanced out that I just can't say if I really did like it or not.

So, let's start with the things I did like. The writing, the whole idea of the Aquarathi, and Jenna. Jenna was amezeballs. Her relationship with Nerissa was great! She was just such an awesome friend, you don't see that kind of friendship much in YA for some strange reason. Usually the girls always end up being frenemies not actual, you know, friends, and really if it wasn't for Jenna and Sawyer I would have had a much harder time remotely liking this book.

The writing was solid and the whole book just flowed. So even when I came across parts that I didn't like and would have normally just stopped reading, it was just really easy to keep going instead. The idea of the Aquarathi and the whole back story of them was very interesting. I had no clue this is about aliens instead of you know, mermaids. They only tell you about an undersea Kingdom in the blurbs so I just assumed it was mermaids we were talking about, but these people aren't even human!

But therein lies my first problem. I just find it hard to believe that a species who has evolved enough and has the technology for space travel through galaxies not just from solar system to solar system isn't more...impressive I guess. Once I realized these aren't mere mermaids I just felt slightly disappointed. I mean they are Aliens! Who had the tech to test out other planets' topography to find out which one would allow life and yet once they get here they just stay put and that's it. I don't know, it just didn't mesh with me.

My biggest issue though is Nerissa. She goes from bratty and selfish to queenly and badass and back again so much that I had a hard time keeping up. I didn't know if I wanted to slap her, shake her or clap. Honestly it was really annoying. She is the main character and the one telling the story, so I would have liked a bit more consistency with her personality than that. By the end she does start leaning more into the queenly bit since technically she is a queen, but still.

And last but not least is the romance. I didn't like it. Yes it wasn't quite insta-love, but it was way too hate you/love you for my liking. They went back and forth so much, and Nerissa was always acting like such a bitch towards Lo! And she was also so incredibly blind to the obvious about him. I understand the bitchiness was a defense mechanism for her, but Jesus tone it down a bit woman! It was over the top.

So at the end this book was interesting enough to keep me reading the whole way through with some nice solid aspects that I enjoyed, as well as some that I really didn't.

So...

Waiting on Free To Fall by Lauren Miller

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that I can't wait for.

    This week I'm waiting on:

Free To Fall by Lauren Miller

    Free To Fall

    by Lauren Miller

    Publishing Date: May 13, 2014

    From Goodreads:
What if there was an app that told you what song to listen to, what coffee to order, who to date, even what to do with your life—an app that could ensure your complete and utter happiness? What if you never had to fail or make a wrong choice?

What if you never had to fall?

Unraveling: Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn

Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn
    Title: Another Little Piece
    Series: N/A
    Publication Date: June 11, 2013

The spine-tingling horror of Stephen King meets an eerie mystery worthy of Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series in Kate Karyus Quinn's haunting debut.

On a cool autumn night, Annaliese Rose Gordon stumbled out of the woods and into a high school party. She was screaming. Drenched in blood. Then she vanished.

A year later, Annaliese is found wandering down a road hundreds of miles away. She doesn't know who she is. She doesn't know how she got there. She only knows one thing: She is not the real Annaliese Rose Gordon.

Now Annaliese is haunted by strange visions and broken memories. Memories of a reckless, desperate wish . . . a bloody razor . . . and the faces of other girls who disappeared. Piece by piece, Annaliese's fractured memories come together to reveal a violent, endless cycle that she will never escape—unless she can unlock the twisted secrets of her past.

    My Thoughts

I'm not entirely sure how I feel regarding this book. It's supposed to be a horror. It wasn't. It felt like it was a weird, strange, wanna-be horror that turned out to be a contemporary with supernatural bits thrown in.

Did I like Another Little Piece? No, actually I didn't. If I wanted to read a weird contemp, I would have chosen something else. I thought Anna/liese was stupid and selfish and bratty. I couldn't connect with her. Franky/Eric was a sick asshole who in my opinion got off way too easily I don't know what the Physician is going to do with the rest of him, but idk I was thinking of more along the lines of burning in the fiery pits of hell, but maybe that's just me?

As much as I wanted to like the parents, I couldn't. I honestly don't know why, can't really put my finger on it, but they just weren't doing it for me. Don't even get me started on Gwen. I'm usually ok with characters that have that kind of bubbly, rambling personality but my god she took it to a whole new level and didn't let up. Logan wasn't that much better, he was one of those characters that just tried WAY too hard and in the end came off as insincere after everything was said and done.

The only saving grace as characters go was Dex. He was messed up yes, but he was doing the best he could and making the best of what he had and honestly the only character I liked in the whole book.

The only horror aspect Another Little Piece had was the ritual in and of itself. The way that the transfer was done. And it wasn't actually horror, it was just downright disgusting and for the love of god WHY would you compare it to CHOCOLATE?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!

Right *ahem*, so, besides that the rest was just a lot of supernatural aspects thrown in with a bit of a mystery. Which to be honest it wasn't much of a mystery. The whole thing is pretty straightforward in my opinion. Anna/liese figured it out mostly by the 20% mark, the rest is just her coming to terms with everything that she's done, which is why this was more of a contemp than anything else.

During the last 20% is when we really get right back to the problem at hand. I thought the ending was all just too neatly tied up after everything that had happened. Everyone got their happy ending, which was dumb! I wanted a dark, nitty-gritty ending but nope..oh well...Btw, no one ever explained what exactly the Physician and his sisters the brujas are...Are they just really powerful witches/sorceress/something? Or are they supposed to be some kind of representation of the Fates?

And my last issue with this was the writing style. It did not lend itself into allowing an easy connection between the reader and the book. The way it was told seemed almost clinical to me. It never once got a meaningful reaction out of me. I was disconnected from the book throughout it's entirety. Which didn't do it any favors what so ever.

In the end, this book was just not for me. It's marketed as a YA horror when in my opinion, it isn't. It's just a contemp with dark supernatural aspects thrown in, and me and contemps don't see eye to eye very much, so maybe readers who are more into that aspect will appreciate Another Little Piece much more than I did.

    The Student Prince by FayJay
"Um. Sorry? Well, he said that - oh, er, actually I should probably mention that he wants an iPod," Merlin added, awkwardly. "As a reward for services rendered to the crown. The dragon."

Gaius licked his lips and looked down into the teacup...."I think perhaps I should have supplied myself with something stronger than Earl Grey," he said, sadly. "The Great Dragon want an iPod. Of course he does. Any other requests? A Big Mac, perhaps?"

"I'm very resourceful, " the dragon agreed, happily. "And I definitely think I want to get onto the internet. It sounds like precisely the kind of brave new world that I should be exploring. I understand there are trolls? And you can flame people? I do like the Twenty First Century!"

    Book Jems

This is a hard one since I follow quite a few blogs and like each one for specific things. But if I had to pick one then it would be Jenn & Emily over at Book Jems. I really value honest reviews and these girls definitely deliver on that. Whenever I'm on the fence about a book I can almost always count on their reviews to enlighten me enough to finally decide on giving that particular book a shot or not, and our tastes run on very similar circles so I put a good amount of weight on their opinion. It's always fun finding both people who have really similar tastes as you and those who are the complete opposite. Plus their reviews never fail to entertain me xD
