Book Blurb

The night Russ Becker witnesses a strange astronomical event, his world changes forever. Before long Russ discovers he's developed incredible superpowers, and he’s not the only one. Three other young people—beautiful Mallory, arrogant Jameson, and mysterious Nadia—have had the same experience and all of them now have powers of their own. Mallory can control peoples’ minds, Jameson moves objects with his thoughts, and Nadia has empathic abilities.

At first the four relish their newfound gifts, but things become serious when they learn they are being hunted by an organization that wants them for its own nefarious purposes. When Russ’s family is threatened, he’s forced into action. What transpires will change all of them in ways they never imagined.

My Thoughts

Received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I'll be honest, the blurb wasn't that awe inspiring, and the plot really isn't anything new, and it was pretty straightforward. With that said, I was totally engrossed by this one.

What really stood out for me was the writing and the characters, and if you have been reading some of my reviews you would already know that characters are very important for me. I loved Russ and how he narrated the story, he was a very down to earth 15-year-old kid. He would sometimes come across as a loner and some people might think that he was a bit of a coward cause he doesn't like conflict, but when the going gets tough he does what needs to be done.

I liked the character development as well, it was beautifully done. We get to see how Russ starts growing into himself. I liked how he was willing to listen to everyone but at the same time maintained a certain suspicion about everything that he was being told, and how he followed his instincts. Not many YA MCs like that out there, they usually end up being incredibly naive just to add conflict to the story.

Speaking of which, there was action almost from the get-go, and kept happening throughout the book, which gave it an excellent pace. The kind where you just have to keep reading and can't put the book down, because even though everything is fairly predictable, it just has that air of suspense and edge-of-your-seat thrill that grips you and keeps your eyes glued to the pages.

We also see some romance taking place, which considering all their ages, it was really well done and realistic, but it wasn't the focus of the book which I am so grateful for. As much as I like my romance, it's refreshing to see how well a book can hold up without the silly love triangles and relationship problems.

This first book in the series was told from Russ' point of view. From the teaser of the second one it will be told from Nadia's pov, which I am definitely looking forward to. I always did like her best. She is the shy girl who keeps to herself, but has so much going on inside, and I have to admit I love her powers, and I'm pretty sure she will be kicking some ass in the second book.

There were also the secondary characters, Carly, Russ' sister. I liked how she started taking a more important role in the book, loved her spunk. Mallory the pretty, genius girl, who I like but don't feel really strongly about. Jameson the nerdy guy, who I can already tell is going to mess up and bring down a world of trouble for the rest of the kids.

All in all, this was an incredibly enjoyable read, if you like books about psychic powers, DNA, and cosmic occurrences then you definitely won't want to miss this one.

Mini Reviews #3 - Dec. 29

Some books that I recently finished and even though I love 2 of them I just don't have enough to say for a whole post :P

Blood Shadows (Blackthorn #1) - 4.5 Stars
by Lindsay J. Pryor
Amazon - Shelfari

This book was really great, it was like a ping pong match, kept going back and forth. You would think you had it figured out, then they did something else and you'd be like oh noesss and then it went back, and you would just end up all over the place not knowing what to think. It was awesome. Can't wait to find out more about Blackthorn!

* This is an Adult Paranormal (British) Romance.

by Stacey Kennedy
Amazon - Shelfari

This was another 4.5 stars for me. The MC was great, she stood up for herself, she was smart, and she didn't take crap from anyone. The plot had a great twist at the end which I didn't see coming at all, just how I like it. The romance was really spot on, kept their distance till things were resolved and went from there. If you like books about witches this one is a must read!

*Also an Adult Paranormal Romance.

The Accidental Genie (Accidentally Paranormal #7) - 3.5 Stars
by Dakota Cassidy
Amazon - Shelfari

I never read the other 6 books in this series, and was never lost during the book. This was a fun, fast read. Lots of brash words and mouthy characters, which were funny up to a point. At times it just got to be a little overboard. It was roll-your-eyes ridiculous at parts as well, but all in good fun.

Question: What book do you think everyone should read? If you could gift the entire population with one book?

Answer: Hmm, so many great books out there, but there is one specifically that blew me away and it kills me that not many people know about it. I think everyone should at least give it a try. It's The Awakening of Ren Crown by Anne Zoelle.

Review: Witch's Brew by Heidi R. Kling

Title: Witch's Brew
Series: The Spellspinners of Melas County #1
Author: Heidi R. Kling
Publishing Date: December 6, 2012
Rating: 4 Stars
Amazon - Goodreads - Shelfari

Book Blurb

The Spellspinners of Melas County is a fantasy YA romance series about a witch, a warlock, and their fight for their forbidden but prophesied love.

Once soulmates, the witch and warlock covens of the California coast have been estranged for a century. Raised to hate each other, their teenagers meet in the Solstice Stones, a magical battleground where they draw energy from each other to maintain their balance. 16 year olds Logan and Lily have spent years training for their first Stones…only to discover just days before that the enemy may not be what either of them had thought.

In Witch’s Brew, Lily is torn between her feelings for Logan and her coven’s need to know who—or what—he is. The young lovers race against time, their distrust for each other, and the powerful influence of their elders to unravel the mystery of their pasts before their future is destroyed.

This is an Active Fiction title

My Thoughts

WHATTTTT!! WHYYYY?? would you end it like that?!

I like reading books with witches but I don't really go looking for them. So glad I stumbled upon this one. Really liked the magic aspect, the conflict between the warlocks and the witched, their history and their politics. I really liked how *easy* the magic actually was, none that weird crap about how magic is so awesome, but then you use it and poof you are done, like a one-time magical wonder. It kind of reminded me of the T.V show Sabrina in respects to the use and ease of magic.

Loved all the characters, even the evil-witch Caemillia (cause I just that ending had written her all over it) and the villan Jacob who is seriously creepy and disgusting. Then there is the bubbly Daisy, and the frenemy Orchid, because honestly she has yet to inspire actual trust. Speaking of which, also don't trust cotton candy haired Jonah, there is just something about him that isn't right. I loved the interactions between Lily and Daisy, and Lily and Logan, super-hot Logan *sigh*. I definitely approve of how the romance is developing, it's obvious they like each other but they are still holding back, like they should be.

What I wasn't so keen about was the choosing how the story went. It really upset me, mostly cause I felt like I was going to miss something at the time and it felt like a really big decision about how the story would go and I really just don't like to choose D:

But all in all, anyone who even remotely likes stories about witches, this is a definite must!

The last thing anyone inside the compound wants is attention from the outside world. For over ten years, the members have lived happily under the direction of Pioneer, the charismatic leader who took them away from their sad, damaged lives. So when Pioneer pinpoints the end of the world and plots a very specific and drastic course for his cult (they must arm themselves and prepare to move into an underground silo to save their community) everyone falls in line; even seventeen-year-old Lyla. At least she's trying to. Lyla wants to paint instead of take target practice. And she'd rather think about the possibilities and people outside the compound (like Cody, the cute son of the local sheriff) than imagine married life in the silo with her intended, Will. As the end of days draws closer, Lyla will have to do more than daydream—it's time to pick up a gun, take a side, and let her family know exactly where she stands.

Review: Touched by Corrine Jackson

Title: Touched
Series: Sense Thieves #1

Book Blurb

Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.

Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll becoming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.

My Thoughts

So, it turns out it has A LOT of Twilight scenes. Characters may be different but the story progressed the same as Twilight with the exception that Remy has a backbone and is Healer and the threat came more from her past than from the Protectors.

I was willing to put aside how similar it was to Twilight at one point cause I liked Remy but as it went on, Remy just started losing points with me left and right.

I just didn't understand how that whole conflict could be had when Dean is just a human and she had been training with Gabe, a freaking Protector, for the past month/s. It just didn't compute. What also didn't make sense to me was the whole conflict with the Protectors now. I mean I get why the fought before and the reasons for the war and what not, but I just don't understand what's the big deal now? I just never perceived them as an actual conflict.

What I also found a bit ridiculous was the way in which they dealt with the other Protectors when they came to visit. All they did was talk to them, told them they searched but nothing and they got back on the plane...Really?! And why the hell did Asher have to go? He had a cold, he was sneezing left and right, how the hell did the Protectors not figure out that Asher was turning mortal?...

There were just too many things in the second half of the book that were too unbelievable. First half I would have given it 4 stars and last half a 1 star.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

My answers...

What are you currently reading?

Touched (Sense Thieves #1) by Corrine Jackson. The premise of the book caught my attention but there were so many reviews comparing it to Twilight that I was hesitant to actually read it. Finally decided what the hell, so here I am. It does have quite a few things, mainly scenes that remind me of Twilight and also the pacing, it's a bit slow. I still must say that I'm enjoying it though :)

What did you recently finish reading?

Peregrine Harker & The Black Death by Luke Hollands. This started out as so much fun, but it started grating on my nerves by the end. Overall it ended up being just an okay read for me. You can see my review here.

Flutter by Gina Linko. Some of my friends ended up liking this one so I was expecting it to be good. Turns out I really didn't like it. I can't pin point what exactly it was that I disliked though. Mainly I think it was that I just didn't get the point of the book? Was it really all just for them to find each other? Bit disappointing.

The Accidental Genie (Accidentally Friends #7) by Dakota Cassidy. This is the first book from the series that I have read, and I must say that I really enjoyed it. Had me laughing out loud a couple of times.

Touch of Death (Touch of Death #1) by Kelly Hashway. The combination of mythology and paranormal was really nicely done. I loved how it centered on Medusa and not the usual Greek Gods, except for Hades of course =P. If you are a mythology fan, should definitely read this.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Blood Shadows (Blackthorn #1) by Lindsay J. Pryor. This one sounds interesting and it has gotten so many raving reviews that I just have to see for myself.

MURDER SPIES EXPLOSIONS REVENGE

Peregrine Harker is about to learn you're never too young to die.

London 1908: A secret society stalks the murky streets, a deadly assassin lurks in the shadows and a series of unexplained deaths are linked by a mystery symbol…

When boy-detective Peregrine Harker stumbles across a gruesome murder he sparks a chain of events that drag him on a rip-roaring journey through a world of spluttering gas lamps, thick fog, deadly secrets and dastardly villains.

Every step of Peregrine’s white-knuckle adventure brings him closer to the vile heart of a terrifying mystery – the true story behind the Brotherhood of the Black Death.

My Thoughts

This book started out as a lot of fun. It was silly, and I was enjoying it, till I wasn't. I guess it just got to be too much. The way Harker spoke got to me after some time. It was much too mature and yet he was so naive at the same time. My biggest problem is actually that Harker didn't actually do much of anything, and he always needed rescuing. The kid got beat up multiple times, and was saved multiple times. Yet they kept mentioning how he was such a good shot, and had fencing lessons and all this fancy stuff, but I barely saw him actually practicing it, or at least not as much as he could have. There were some scenes were he used his skills but there were too many in which he didn't.

He was also strung along for like the whole book quite literally till the end, and he never once suspected any of it, he is a journalist for god's sake he should have been more suspicious, which brings me to another point. Every time there were suspicious sounds and events going on, he rationalized them and dismissed them. He is investigating, shouldn't be dismissing anything D:

I liked the ending it explained a couple of things that were previously quite unbelievable. It was this huge messy showdown, fun stuff. This book reminded me a lot of the second Sherlock Holmes movie in the way it was narrated. Overall I liked certain parts and aspects of this book, but in the end it was just okay for me. If you are looking for a silly mystery, then I recommend this one.

*Thank you to NetGalley and Sparkling Books for a copy!

[BotW] Harbinger by Peta Crake

Title: Harbinger
Author: Peta Crake
Release Date: August 16, 2012
Rating: 2 Stars
Amazon - Goodreads - Shelfari

Book Blurb

As an Olympic messenger, suburban Aussie girl Ophelia Lind is used to being at the beck and call of the gods. But when gorgeous demigod Aden moves into her neighbourhood and starts taking advantage of her services, Ophelia believes life could not get any worse. She's about to be proven very wrong.

Ophelia tries to enjoy a normal, everyday life while running messages for the Greek gods – but without warning an odious creature - evil incarnate - begins to stalk her. As a messenger dealing with the all-powerful and sometimes frightening gods, Ophelia is accustomed to adventures and scrapes. But this is different. Even Aden, who is madly and deeply in love with Ophelia, finds it difficult to protect her. Suddenly Ophelia is in a battle for survival and begins to question everything – her upbringing, her identity, and her true feelings for the alluring and entirely frustrating Aden.

Harbinger is a terrific romance laced with humour, danger and adventure. The deeply likeable, unstoppable Ophelia takes us on a quest that puts all the memories she holds dear – and her own heart – at risk.

My Thoughts

This book had a lot of potential, but it fell short. I liked how it incroporated the greek mythology with the rest of the gods from other mythologies like the nordic. Crake really captured the cold hard attitude of a woman scorned way too many times of Hera, and the true egotistical bitchiness that was Aphrodite. Honestly if it weren't cause they were such awful gods I would have given up on the book. As it was, it was a battle just to finish it.

They never really mentioned the MCs age and from the way the book was written I assumed she was in her teens, but about 3/4ths of the way in she finally mentions that she is actually in her mid twenties and boy was that a shock! The way the girl was acting and the book was written, it would be a very immature girl. I admired Ophelia at first because she seemed to always bounce back after all the horrible crap she went through, but after the uptenth tragic thing it started feeling more unbelievable than anything else. I just don't see how a girl like her could really be more or less ok with how many things she went through. Specially because she just came across as really weak and needy. She always ended up needing someone else to rescue her and then cuddle her. By the end of the book I just couldn't see it.

The love interests were eh. I actually did like Hermes a lot better as just a friend. Aden was nice I guess, he always seemed to never be involved with anything bad but at the same time right smack in the middle of it. I just didn't care very much about his character.

In the end this was just an ok read for me, still enjoyed some aspects of it, but could have been better.

Book Blurb

The students of Green Lane Academy roam their halls unaware that below their manicured campus exists a prestigious school of an entirely different kind . . .

Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope has enrolled at the Campus Below: a spy academy for shape-shifters hidden deep beneath the grounds of a boarding school whose humans unknowingly protect it. There, thanks to a carefully planned schedule, she leads a double life: spy trainee Below and normal teenager Above.

As if two course loads, concealing a secret power she alone wields, and coping with her father’s recent death weren’t enough, Phoebe finds herself developing major feelings for actor and teen heartthrob Colten Chase, who attends the Campus Above and appears to be majoring in winning Phoebe’s heart. But when officials learn that Phoebe may be at the center of a startling prophecy, she becomes the target of shape-shifting assassins who will stop at nothing to suppress the truth.

Now Phoebe’s lessons about Shaper’s enemies and spycraft take on great importance as a menace stalks the campus, with Phoebe as its target. Meanwhile, what began as an unlikely relationship with Colten, quickly morphs into heartache when she suspects that something sinister lurks beneath this movie star’s glitter and fame. Suddenly, Phoebe’s caught in a mesh of lies, betrayals, and danger where she doesn’t know who to trust, and needs to rely on herself—and her secret power—to get to the truth and to stay alive.

My Thoughts

Let me start off by saying shapeshifter books aren't my thing. I don't mind if they are a secondary character but as the main focus it's just not for me.

What drew me in to this one was the whole idea of the spy school under the normal school. At first I was a bit confused with the whole shapeshifter concept since Phoebe kept mentioning her hearts and I kept thinking it was a typo till it was explained xD

I liked how the story flowed and I liked all characters. I was a bit frustrated with Phoebe, I really wanted her to use her powers more. She came out to be kind of helpless when she shouldn't be. I understand why she couldn't use it as much but still.

I wish the story was centered more on the plot instead of the romance not that the romance was bad, it was actually really nicely done, but still, that's just my preference.

I was pleasantly surprised at the end, I did not even suspect that person as being the traitor, it came totally out of left field for me. I kept trying to keep with the plot thinking I had mostly everything figured out, it turns out, I didn't xD

This was a nice, entertaining read, which a new twist to shapeshifters. Good start to the series :)
