Book Blurb

Some believe that at birth, we’re each born with some sort of guardian angel attached to us, watching from afar, but never seen by the human eye. But they’re wrong. Truth is it’s not that simple. There are certain people, special people, born of this world and of the other, who need that extra protection…that extra guidance. They go their entire lives, unaware of the other world, and unaware of the existence of their own personal watcher that watches from afar. But what happens when fate takes a turn for the worst, and The One who needs the aid of a watcher more than anyone before her can’t be found to be protected?

Bijou Fitzroy is strange. With the chaotic and unwanted gift of being an empath, she has spent her entire life as a sheltered recluse, being homeschooled by her secretive overprotective grandmother, who never stays long enough in one location for Bijou to ever settle and make friends. Not only does she lack social skills, but her physical appearance is so ethereal that it beckons onlookers to look away before she has the chance to make eye contact. Oh, and things get even weirder. Besides the occasional tendency to see strange things that no one else seems to notice, sixteen-year-old Bijou has been plagued by semi-prophetic nightmares of strange creatures her entire life; yet she yearns for sleep, because it’s the only place she gets to see him…well sort of. No matter what Bijou dreams of, the faceless boy is always there like some sort of harbinger of danger, always watching, always waiting. And even though his coming always pre-empts chaos, she’s fallen in love with this boy without a face.

When Bijou and her grandmother move to Eldersburg and she starts to attend the local high school, she meets Sebastian Sinjin, a strange boy, who forces Bijou to question the world around her, and the grandmother she thought she knew. Bijou’s world begins to crumble as the creatures from her nightmares begin to take shape in her reality, the faceless boy becomes real, and town locals begin to disappear as she finds herself at the center of a war she never knew was being fought. Bijou has to stand alone and be the savior everyone expects her to be.

My Thoughts

I tried. I really did. But this book was so all over the place that as much as I wanted to get into it, it was just not possible. Not only were there jumps in setting and people being in and out of a room but the characters were all hateful. Not only hateful but with multiple personalities as well.

I would be reading one part and then suddenly the mood changes and they are doing/talking about something else entirely and I'm left wondering what the hell just happened. I would find myself reading and re-reading paragraphs just to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It was exhausting and annoying.

Then we have the characters themselves. They mention how Sebastian runs hot and cold, but that is a HUGE understatement. The guy has a freaking split personality. I could not keep up with all the mood swings. One second he'd be pissed at her, the next he would kiss her and then just randomly leave the room only to come back and start acting like they were best friends. I didn't get it.

Gigi was one b**ch of a 'grandmother'. She would slap Bijou for the silliest things and kept ordering the girl around like she was a dog on a leash and not a girl. Then Bijou would try to assert some kind of independence and stand up for herself, while all the time thinking she was sorry for being so mean to Gigi. Needless to say, it was a very unhealthy relationship.

Then there is Bijou herself. She was another with multiple personalities. She would act as if her 'going crazy' was something she could handle and try to figure out, but when someone starts pointing it out to her she goes into full on denial. Not only denial, but hysterical. Crying and sobbing, yet apparently she has an inability to let people see her cry. Then what the hell is up with the constant crying? She was also so freaking rude it was astounding. The responses she gives to people genuinely trying to help her were beyond messed up, and she would interrupt with her little sarcastic remarks, which in this case were anything but witty or amusing.

And to top it all off there is a love triangle. Seeing as how I just couldn't like Sebastian what with his hot and cold, Niko looked like the better choice only because he at least knew what he was. One of the bad guys. He was consistent if anything else.

This all leaves me incredibly disappointed. The book had so much promise. The lore of the djinn and how it incorporates with all the other supernatural creatures was such a breath of fresh air. This was the only thing that kept me reading all the way till the halfway point. Unfortunately it just wasn't enough to outweigh all the horrible characters and the constant jumping around.

Ninety-five days, and then I’ll be safe.

I wonder whether the procedure will hurt.

I want to get it over with.

It’s hard to be patient.

It’s hard not to be afraid while I’m still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn’t touched me yet.

Still, I worry.

They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness.

The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don’t.

My Thoughts

I can't believe it took me this long to finally read this. I actually joined a read-a-long to push myself to begin this. Crazy right? Once I finally started it had my complete attention.

At first Lena was too much of a goody-two-shoe. She follows all the rules, and is ruled by fear (perfectly understandable seeing as what happened to her mom). I still didn't like it anyway, but I figured she would change obviously. And hell did she! She becomes this incredibly brave girl. She may still have her insecurity and panic attacks but she grows so much. Leaves Hana completely in the dust.

What was hard for me to accept was how everyone, specially Lena at first, could think of love, emotions, as a disease. Like it's a different entity from you. Emotions is part of who you are, taking that away just leaves you as a shell made of skin, blood, and bones. I just could never really accept that, as well done as the world building was, I could never truly go along with it.

Speaking of world building, it was excellent. How every chapter had a little piece of the Book of Shhh, or the kids games, and the quotes and poetry that dealt with love were classified as dangerous words. It really brought home how everything is and how people were brainwashed taught to think about love. How they nit and picked and changed texts to suit their needs. I actually would have liked to know more about the new order, I thought it was pretty interesting how apparently god and science were going together now.

All the relationships here were beautifully done. I loved the connection between Lena and Gracie. Gracie totally kicks ass. She may not talk, but she can think for herself and is so loyal and caring. I was kinda disappointed with Hana towards the end. So much talk but then nothing. I'm hoping she turns into an awesome inside woman later on or something.

I can't wait to find out what happens to Lena and Alex now. This is a must read for dystopian lovers! ;)

Tobias is the Devil – the ruler of Hell. For years he has banished the souls of innocent humans only to compliment his ruling status, but slowly things are starting to change.

Fewer souls are struggling down the elevator ride eventuating at Hell’s reception desk, yet heaven is reporting an influx of angel’s climbing the staircase into the clouds.

Tobias begins questioning the rules with his sister and rivalry – Constance – the leader of heaven.

When his inquiries go unanswered, he entrusts his assistant Arliah with a mission she simply cannot refuse, yet reluctantly accepts

Her uncanny nature and gothic philosophy only cause havoc among Hell’s people, and their eyes slowly open as they begin noticing her continual departures through Hell’s gates and presumably into the beauty of heaven.

What Arliah soon comprehends is that the gates of heaven are located at the other end of Earth.

Earth – A deserted world: a place of patience, hope and misery. The only escape is to win the game; your target – the humans with the leading bounties.

Will her black magic connections lead her to the gates of heaven – a world believed to be the light at the end of the tunnel? Or will her newfound supernatural powers carve the third strike against her signed contract?

Her mission – find heaven, and once she does, bring it to Hell.

Excerpt

Although the wide-open space that the desert provides gives me a certain realm of safety, it also opens up a new world of danger. This desert doesn't just contain sand; it owns the gates to Hell.

The sun exits, allowing the moonbeams to guide my way. The sweat that once consumed my skin has now gone, allowing coldness to enter my body. The night is black, showcasing the thousands of stars that make up tonight's sky.

My legs begin to ache, proving I must be close. As my eyes scan the area, I can't help feel the oppressive silence. No noise from banished souls, no echoes from the outer city, just deathly quiet. Too quiet. I take in the outline of the lift. A small rectangular shape, outlined in silver metal.

If I were any taller, I’d have to duck or my head would be covered in bruises. A batch of unsettled butterflies take up residence in my stomach. Something is not right. Standing in front of the rusted lift doors, something is definitely telling me not to push the button alerting the lift to my presence.

Surveying the situation, I become concerned with what little protection this scene provides me. The humans must be laughing at the target I am so readily providing them. To them I am no threat at all, just a young woman with long black hair and skin so white I could pass as a ghost. My bright blue eyes could be my only chance of scaring them off. I realize I'm not a bulky woman with muscles like a professional wrestler. I don't have devil horns sprouting from my forehead.
My appearance betrays no mythical power with which to fight them off. I'm just a girl.

I rely on my black leather trench coat, my high leather boots and my visible tattoos to composite the bad ass image I need to survive in this place. I pull my dagger from its hilt, happy that my glove hides the ring. Allowing a smile to form across my face, hoping to display the confidence I only hope I possess. I wait. Seconds turn into minutes. The unsettling feeling staunchly refuses to leave me. With my dagger still at the ready, I slam my left hand against the button on the panel.

I jump when the lift jerks into motion. This is the only sound I have heard in hours. I wait. The eerie creaking of the rusted chains pulling the carriage to the surface echoes loudly through the desert. No hiding my presence now. A small red light in the distance grabs my attention. The light appears to be glowing and growing in size at a rapid passé. The smile drains from my face. My heartbeat increases causing my eyes to widen in fear.

My façade of confidence is immediately replaced with fear as I realize exactly what's heading in my direction.

Mary is part Vietnamese. Carter is a complete jerk. Normally, they don't talk much.

But when Mary's in an accident on the way to school one morning, Carter nearly dies saving her life. The doctors say his chances of living are slim, and Mary's feeling the full weight of survivor's guilt.

However, Carter's back at school in a matter of days, as if nothing had happened. Although, he is a little "glitchy," and he's developed a sudden and intense interest in Mary. She thinks he's suffering from major brain trauma from the accident. Or that he's been possessed.

As it so happens, Carter really is possessed. And the thing controlling him is having the time of its life learning to be human.

Featuring a diverse cast of characters, RADIANT is a funny "paranormal-lite" story about being human, being in love, and being healed.

Excerpt

A voice called to her. It seemed close, and it was getting louder as the pain got sharper. "Hey? Hey! Are you all right?" it asked.
Mary blinked several times before she could finally see again. She was in the middle of the street. The cars had stopped and people on the sidewalk were staring.
"Are you all right?" the voice asked again. It was coming from a man wearing some type of uniform.
"What…?" Mary tried to say more, but her voice suddenly stopped working.
"Careful," he said as he helped her up. "Looks like you can move all right. Here, let's get you out of the street."
He helped her over to the sidewalk. "Stay here. Someone's calling the paramedics." And then he was gone.
Mary sat there, still in a daze. She started noticing familiar stuff all over the ground—an open book bag, books, folders, unused tampons, a shoe, and an apple with one bite mark. Her eyes followed the trail of debris to a brilliant red sports car, half of which was smashed in by a city bus.
What had happened? Mary studied the whole scene, trying to puzzle together the pieces. Then it dawned on her. The car had hit her. Not intentionally. She had run in front of the bus without knowing it. It was about to hit her, but the car had gotten in the way first. It had saved her life.
Mary thought about looking in the car. Then her feet sorta moved without her meaning them to, and she made her way to the passenger door. She recognized the person inside. Carter. She knew his last name, but she couldn't think of what it was. He was slumped over the seat with blood oozing all over his face. His eyes were shut.
Mary knocked on the window. The tears in her hand stung.
No response.
She beat the window with her fist.
Still nothing.
Mary stared. She couldn't believe it. On any other day, she wouldn't exchange two words with this guy. Just yesterday, he nearly mowed down an elderly couple while driving out of the school lot. Mary had secretly wished he'd be taught a lesson. But she didn't mean this.
She tried the door handle, but it was still locked. Suddenly, Carter's eyes flickered opened. He looked straight at her.
Mary gasped and pressed her face against the window.
Carter's eyes closed.
She stared at him, waiting for him to open them again. Waiting for any sign of life. But he was still like he was before.
Hands suddenly took hold of Mary, pulling her away from the car. Her feet moved on their own again. Someone was yelling "Miss" a lot. Parts of her brain found other noises too, like sirens, voices, beeping, and other things. The hands directed her to sit on something hard and cold.
"Miss? Can you hear me? Can you tell me your name?"
Mary didn't answer. She still hadn't found her voice, and her mind was fuzzy, too.
"Is that her bag there? Does she have a driver's license?"
A different person spoke. "No license, but I found a student ID. Her name's Mary Phan. She's seventeen and a junior here at Lewis Prep."
Mary heard a third voice. "I just talked with some of the kids on the sidewalk. One of them said her mom's a nurse at the memorial hospital."
"Find out how to contact the mom. Anyone see what happened?"
"Cops are questioning witnesses right now. Looks like she ran in front of the bus. It would've nailed her if that sportster hadn't gotten in the way."
"Anything on the bus or the driver of the car?"
"Everyone on the bus looks fine. The car belongs to a kid named Carter Maxwell. Also a junior." A sigh. "I wouldn't hold my breath. He looks really bad in there."

Mary tuned out everything else. All sights. All sounds. The only thing she could see in her mind was Carter staring at her.
