Tangled Up In: CHAOS by Christine O'Neil

CHAOS by Christine I'Neil
Title: CHAOS
Series: Kardia Chronicles Book One
Publication Date: August 26, 2013

My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I'm a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I'm stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying—and super-hot—guy all up in my business, I'm about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there's this watchdog council of semis who keeps an eye out for any bad apples. They think I'm the baddest of the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he's got secrets of his own...and they may just kill us both.

My Thoughts

A copy was provided by the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

After seeing the cover, reading the blurb, and then the excerpt for chapter 1 I had figured I would love CHAOS so I jumped at the chance to review this when I was contacted. I figured wrong. The first chapter was incredibly misleading.

CHAOS was your typical YA book with all the major points that I can no longer stand reading. From the first chapter, I thought Maggie was going to be a spunky, strong, independent heroine. She sure is spunky to the point she is a jerk to her mom and just comes off as being a grade-A bitch. Strong? She is supposed to be hating Mac Finnegan with a passion, he has been picking on her for months now. That was another thing, the 'bullying' or whatever wasn't that bad at all. I really thought she should have been able to handle that way differently, but because she is so 'spunky' she ends up making it a bigger deal than it should have been. So anyway she is supposed to be hating this guy's guts, but once she sees him she turns into a blushing, simpering fool...Really?

Next up we have the silly reason as to why Maggie is in the dark about her powers and the supernatural world. Her mom wont tell her. She has all the damn answers but will she say anything? Nope. What's the huge reason she is keeping such important info from Maggie when she is having such a hard time with her powers? She just can't deal with that aspect of her life apparently. THAT'S IT. She doesn't want to. Can't be bothered with it. So ridiculous!

Then of course we have hot guy turning into a stalker, cause, you know, he has to keep an eye on her in case she kills someone with her powers so he can rat her out. He is supposed to be doing surveillance and letting her slip up, but instead he keeps showing his face everywhere she goes and makes it damn easy to figure out he is following her. They argue. He threatens her of his on going stalkerish ways. Lovely.

After all that, even finding out the unique spin they put on Greek mythology, tying it in with the stories about succubi, just wasn't enough. I couldn't be bothered with any of the characters or the weak reasoning behind their actions. Bear in mind I got to like 40% then called it quits. Who knows maybe she would have grown a real back bone and not one that melts every time she comes in contact with Mac.

So...

Would I Recommend it?

      1. The blurb makes it sound so interesting, but I can't stand whiny MCs, so I think this is one I'll give a pass on. Thanks for sharing!

      2. My pleasure! :) She is so bitchy to her mom too! I hate characters who are like that to their parents without enough of a reason.
