Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

My Thoughts

There will be spoilers here so proceed with caution!

This was just a long, long journey of watching stupidity at work.

"The Darkling will hunt you for the rest of your days."
"Then you and I will have something in common, won't we? Besides, I like to have powerful enemies. Makes me feel important."
Mal crossed his arms and considered the privateer. "I can't decide if you're crazy or stupid."
"I have so many good qualities," Sturmhond said. "It can be hard to choose."
I'll be honest. I liked the first say 20-30% because we get introduced to Sturmhond and he is just a hell of a character. He single-handedly carried this whole book, because without him I would have DNF'd this a long time ago. He is the smart, manipulative, charming, but hardass character that I wish Alina was.

Now on to the stupidity:

- There was the bread crumb trail they left with the gold hair clips.
- Made no connections about the amplifier and how she is bound to the Darkling in more than one way.
- Again no connections about the bite and the visitations from the Darkling.
- The firebird location was obvious. She even says the arch kinda rings a bell but doesn't figure it out till it's too late.
- The stupid decisions she makes through out the book. (Walking into the crowd of fanatics by herself and none of her guard know where she went).
- and the boy drama!!! OH LORD THE BOY DRAMA. I wanted to gauge my eyes out. There was a love triangle in the first book between her, Mal and the Darkling. Now it's her, Mal, Nikolai, and the Darkling, because lets be honest here. She might be willing to kill him but she still has the hots for him.

Mal is an asshole pretty much throughout the whole book. Gets jealous at the drop of a hat and Alina keeps trying to accommodate him so he doesn't have a reason to get jealous while she herself sees every beautiful girl as a competitor. They are in the middle of mounting a war against the Darkling and she is seething with envy at how beautiful Zoya is.

I just can't. This book was too much for me.

"You know, for two people with a love eternal, you're awfully insecure"

So...

Would I Recommend it?

  1. I felt pretty "eh..." about the first book, which is why I never got to this one. I only skimmed your review so I don't get spoiled if I ever do decide to read it, but I think I'll just wait for a while longer haha
I have heard lots of excellent things about Stormhund though, so I might read just for him!

  2. I was going to buddy read the last book with a friend so I binge read the series. If I had had to wait the year I would never have finished this lol.
Sturmhond is really an awesome character, so at least you have him to look forward to in this one :)
